Long Term Causes of WWI
Militarism- Militarism occurs when the government of a country gives an especially high profile to the military. This was happening in France and Germany, where the size of their armies had doubled by 1914. This created intense competition between Germany and Britain for control of the seas. Both Germany and Britain began building effective battleships and Germany launched a plan to attack France through Belgium if Russia made an attack on them.
Nationalism-
As a result of the Congress of Vienna splitting Germany and Italy up into different states, the two nations began action to unify; Italy in 1861 and Germany in 1871.
The Franco-Prussian war led to France losing part of their territory, Alsace-Lorraine, to Germany; they were set on getting it back.
Austria- Hungary was confronted with nationalist aspirations from Poles, Czechs, Slovaks and Serbs.
Serbs wished to unite with the independent kingdom of Serbia.
Belgium declared independence from the Netherlands in 1830.
Greece, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria gained independence.

Imperialism- With Britain having control in five different continents, and France having control over large parts of Africa, Germany became increasingly frustrated with their small amount of land in Africa, since they began colonizing later than France and Britain.
